Car and Driver is a prestigious American automotive enthusiast magazine. It was founded more than 65 years ago in July of 1955 and has a following of more than 1.2 million consumers. Car and Driver’s 10Best Cars and Trucks list began 40 years ago and has been released on an annual basis for the past four decades.

This automotive enthusiast magazine is well-renowned for providing drivers and prospective car buyers with in-depth unbiased reviews and rigorous testing results for hundreds of vehicle models. For example, each vehicle model that is chosen for Car and Driver’s annual 10Best list is listed attached to an unbiased review of the vehicle model that pays great attention to detail and addresses both the highlights and flaws of each car, truck and SUV that earns a spot on the 10Best list for any given year.

Car and Driver’s review of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI highlighted this sporty hatchback’s power on the road and its six-speed manual transmission option along with its performance-focused technology that was updated for the 2022 model year. However, the automotive enthusiast magazine also criticized the less-than-upscale interior of the 2022 Golf GTI as well as the lack of tactile controls inside this sporty hatchback model.

One of the characteristics of Car and Driver that makes this automotive enthusiast magazine so trustworthy is its consistently honest reviews that recognize that no vehicle model is perfect and never fails to point out the flaws of any given vehicle—even the models that Car and Driver choose to name as the overall best vehicle models of the year.

How are Car and Driver’s 10Best Vehicles Chosen?

In order to curate their 10Best Cars and Trucks list, Car and Driver rigorously tests more than 300 cars, trucks, and SUVs in the months leading up to the release of their updated 10Best list. When putting together their 10Best Cars and Trucks list each year, Car and Driver focuses on the driving experience that each vehicle they test offers as well as the value of each vehicle they test, and how well each vehicle lives up to the claims its automaker has made about it.

Experts at Car and Driver examine all important components of each of the 300-plus car, truck, and SUV models that they test for consideration for their 10Best list for that particular year. These components include each vehicle’s performance, style, efficiency, value, infotainment tech, safety features, and much more. After careful examination of virtually every part and system of more than 300 vehicle models—a long process during which the Car and Driver team takes detailed notes on each vehicle—Car and Driver rate each vehicle they examine on a 100-point scale. The 10 highest-scoring cars, trucks, and SUVs end up on the Car and Driver 10Best Cars and Trucks list for the following year.

Car and Driver’s 10Best list is not created from scratch every year. Car and truck models have the opportunity to remain on the 10Best list indefinitely year after year, but they are challenged each year by other new or updated models from the current model year and may be eliminated from the 10Best list if they no longer measure up to their competition. That is part of the reason why it is so impressive that the Volkswagen Golf GTI has held a spot on Car and Driver’s 10Best list for 16 consecutive years without being bumped off of the list by a different, newer, or redesigned model.
